Undergraduate Overview
The Department of Bioengineering provides an interdisciplinary setting that prepares students to have an immediate impact after graduation in the field. Our aim is to train students to be thought-leaders, innovators and experts in combining engineering, medicine and biology to improve the quality of human life. Undergraduates work alongside faculty in a hands-on approach to learning.

The Bachelor of Science program in Biomedical Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Biomedical Engineering Program Criteria.
Biomedical engineering students will possess knowledge of contemporary issues and be provided the education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental and societal context. They will recognize the need for and have an ability to engage in life-long learning. Also of key importance in the program is that student learn to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
Program educational objectives
Biomedical Engineering Bachelor’s graduates are expected to attain the following Program Educational Objectives within a few years after graduation:
To attain careers and leadership roles in biomedical engineering or related fields
Gain admission to graduate, professional, or health related programs
Student outcomes
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
- An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
- An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
- An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
- An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
- An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
- An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
