MEET EVELIN RIOS, A BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING STUDENT WHO IS THE RECIPIENT OF THE ERIC JONSSON SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AWARD!
Evelin is currently researching biomechanics with a focus on oral and orthopedic implants. She won this award by presenting her research project titled “Impact of Diabetes in the Recruitment of Stem Cells Towards Titanium Implant Osseointegration in Mice.” The project focused on investigating the cellular mechanisms related to titanium implant osseointegration failures in a diabetic mouse model.
“This is important because diabetic individuals face an increased risk of early implant failure, which is why there is a need for strategies to improve their healing capacity and increase their chance for treatment success,” Rios said.
Evelin is currently conducting her research in the Biomaterials for Osseointegration and Novel Engineering (BONE) Lab with Dr. Danieli Rodrigues and her mentor Dr. Claudia Biguetti.
“I am very excited for this award because it will allow me to learn more about the direct effects of diabetes in stem cells and find key targets for development of new therapies.” Rios said, “I also will learn more about immunolabeling techniques and interpretations. I plan to use this learning experience in research to progress with my career in Biomedical Engineering research in the biomaterials field!
Congratulations, Evelin, on this great accomplishment! We cant wait to see where your research will take you!
