PhD Cellular and Developmental Biology

Overview

Hyun-Joo Nam received her Ph. D. in Cellular and Developmental Biology from Harvard University in 1996 under the direction of Dr. C. Frederick for work on crystallographic studies of SH2 and SH3 domains of cancer related proteins. In 1997, she became a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Biological chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, Harvard University. She carried out research on structural analysis of Receptor Tyrosine Phosphatases, LAR and CD45.

In 2003, she joined the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida as a research faculty, where her research expanded to include structure-function analysis of single stranded DNA viruses and protein-DNA complexes. Dr. Nam joined the Faculty at the University of Texas at Dallas in September of 2009. Her current research includes virus and protein crystallography and engineering.

Research Interests

Our research area includes structure-function studies of virus, protein, and protein-DNA complexes, and engineering of these molecules for biotechnology applications. We combine the methods of crystallography, biochemistry and molecular modeling to study molecules involved in gene expression controls in cancer cells and virus particles for gene delivery systems. Our aim is to correlate structure to function for the development of therapeutic treatment of disease.
